In August of 2017 the Guninpho crew once again traveled to Saratoga, Wyoming for the 4th annual Spur Outfitters Firearms Training and Writer’s Event. We spent ten days teaching various firearms classes and testing firearms. This was our largest event yet with over 200 students attending classes. Ruger firearms again sponsored the guns and both the students and writers gave them quite a workout. A big thanks to our other sponsors, Hornady, Black Hills, CCI, Birchwood Casey, MGM Targets, Galco Gunleather, North County Firearms and Sun Optics for their generous support.
For this year’s event, Ruger sent out a bunch of nice firearms for us to test. These included the Ruger American 9mm full sized pistol, SR22 Pistol, 10/22 Takedown rifle, Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor, American Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor, AR-556 and American Rimfire rifles in .17 HMR. We also had some of the new Ruger Suppressors, including the new Silent-SR ISB barrel for the 10/22 takedown. Thanks to Hornady, Black Hills and CCI, we had plenty of ammo for everything. We topped each of the long guns with Sun Optics glass and then went to the range for a long sight in session. Spur Outfitters has created a great rifle range for the use of their staff and clients. The range has paper and steel targets ranging from 50 yards to one mile so it makes it the ideal spot for testing any long gun. They also have a 50 yard short range filled with MGM steel so there is plenty of room for handgunning as well.
We taught classes on topics including the handgun, AR15, long range rifle, youth rimfire and personal safety and home defense. Our students ranged from 5 year old children to octogenarians and thanks to Ruger, there was something that fit everyone’s needs. The novice and elderly really liked the .22 pistols while most of the shooters found the Ruger American Pistol worked well for them. Birchwood Casey provided everyone with eye and hearing protection as well as plenty of targets. Overall, everyone had a great time in a safe environment.
In addition to the ranges, the guys had plenty of opportunities to test the guns in the field. The ranch is loaded with prairie dogs and the cattlemen and farmers are always looking for shooters to thin them out. The Ruger Precision Rifles had no problem hitting the long range steel targets as well as popping their share of long range prairie dogs. While the Ruger American Rifle isn’t designed to shoot the long distances that the Precision can, it still shot very well and is an excellent big game rifle or coyote gun. The American Rimfire and 10/22 rifles had the biggest workout, though. They were shot daily with plenty of varmints falling to their accuracy. Ruger has always made outstanding firearms and this latest batch continues that tradition.
2018 will mark the 5th anniversary of the Spur Outfitters Firearms Training and Writer’s Event. If you are in the Saratoga area between August 18th and the 25th, please stop by and join us for great camaraderie and good training with some excellent firearms.
